Archaic Machine

The relief resembles a machine from a remote time: tool, totem and memory at once. A large arched form, like an open monolith, dominates the left and central area of the vertical composition. Its black perimeter encloses fields of grey, olive, pale green and blue, divided by a broad upper arc and panels holding raised points, small bars and long U-shaped loops. At the right edge, a slender black and turquoise rod remains detached from the main body, measuring the pale void around it. Minute shadows and projecting profiles make the surface’s substance perceptible. Balance arises from the contrast between the gathered mass of the larger element and the isolated slender vertical, between modular order and material irregularity.
