Augusto Oppo and Stanis Dessy: graphics, painting and visual culture in Sassari
A city can transmit crafts and institutions without producing a unique style. From Dessy to Oppo, the sign changes function.
Abstract
Public sources and catalogue entries distinguish the continuity of Sassari graphic culture from generational transformation.

Sassari is not a still school
Stanis Dessy combines painting, engraving, watercolor, illustration and teaching. The monograph digitized by the Sardinia Digital Library and the collections of the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Sassari document their role in the city's visual culture. Oppo belongs to a later generation and works between graphics, screen printing, abstraction and design. A personal relationship is not documented to allow a direct line.
The comparison studies the continuity of practices — sign, landscape, graphics — and transformations. Dessy retains a tonal observation and an engraving discipline; Oppo makes the sign more unstable, brings the color towards non-naturalistic syntheses and crosses new supports.
Dessy: the sign as a job and measure
The scientific resource curated by Giuliana Altea and Marco Magnani reconstructs Dessy's training, works, correspondence, exhibitions and bibliography. Xylography, engraving and watercolor are not secondary techniques: they organize his ability to synthesize landscapes and daily life without losing narrative clarity.
The Pinacoteca di Sassari preserves graphic works by Dessy along with those by Giuseppe Biasi. This data places the graphics within a city public history. Oppo inherits an environment in which reproduced image and painting can dialogue, but modifies its tools and purposes.
Plots in transit
ASO-0483, «Trame in transito», s.d. is crossed by a network of lines and fields that suggests passage. The title is a catalogue title; technique and date are not verified. We cannot call it engraving just because of the dominance of the sign.
Dessy controls the line through documented graphic processes. Oppo makes the plot a more ambiguous event, mixed with color and surface. The affinity concerns the visual economy; the difference lies in the technical status and readability.
Figures and cities
ASO-0464, «La città alle spalle», 1974, dated 1974, has figures in front of an architecture for large masses. The scene remains recognizable but the depth is compressed. ASO-0485, «L’ora del ritorno», 1986 retains an idea of return and story, although the title is editorial.
Dessy often builds the observed world with elegant sign and measured tone. Oppo tends to make the figure a structural element between fields. Figurative culture does not disappear: it is subjected to a more drastic synthesis.
The landscape after the graphics
ASO-0516, «Vento maestro», s.d. gives the wind a visual direction; ASO-0495, «Paesaggio in rosa», 1991, from 1991, uses pink to move the place away from the natural color. In ASO-0512, «Origami del cielo», 1995, from 1995, almost bent shapes transform the sky into a building.
These works measure the generational distance. Dessy summarizes without losing the tone of the landscape; Oppo uses the landscape as a field for geometry, autonomous color and poetic title. There is no linear passage, but a transformation of the possibilities offered by graphics and painting.
From cards to shapes
ASO-0483, «Trame in transito», s.d. The sheet is crossed by opposite directions: oblique fields, bundles of lines and darker knots bump, interrupt and resume elsewhere. In the center, a lighter area holds the gaze like a pause within the movement; around, the sign thickens to suggest vegetation, reliefs or a changing cartography. The image remains deliberately unstable, suspended between observation and invention. Oppo thus builds a space that cannot be traveled only once, but changes orientation with each new reading. The sign builds movement without documented engraving technique.
ASO-0485, «L’ora del ritorno», 1986 The scene appears as a caught encounter in its most uncertain moment. Two dark presences, a vertical structure and a purple core are arranged along fast diagonals; a few strokes are enough to evoke a built environment, perhaps an interior or a place of transit, without closing it in a story. Color does not complete the figures: it measures the distance and expectation. In this 1986 sheet, Oppo maintains contact with reality, but subjects it to a nervous synthesis, where what happens counts less than the tension between those who stay and those who are about to move. Figure and landscape maintain a narrative memory.
ASO-0512, «Origami del cielo», 1995 Bent and overlapping shapes rise from the earth towards two large luminous curves. Pale yellow, gray, brown and blue build an image that can recall mountains, paper wings or an opening organism; no reading prevails over the others. Dated 1995, the composition holds together lightness and weight with an almost architectural discipline. Oppo brings geometry into contact with the imagination, letting the sky seem to be born from the same folds that organize matter. The geometric synthesis preserves the landscape.
ASO-0516, «Vento maestro», s.d. A diagonal current crosses fields of blue, purple, brown and orange, bending each shape in the same direction. The engraved lines accelerate the movement, while some denser areas oppose momentary resistance. The documented title, «Vento maestro», does not describe a visible element but the force that holds the image together. Oppo makes the air perceptible through what it modifies: the landscape becomes a mobile structure, and the color retains the impact of a passage that cannot be stopped. Direction and color transform the observation.
ASO-0464, «La città alle spalle», 1974 A red sky looms over the city, reduced to an ochre and black profile towards which figures from behind advance. In the lower register, smaller presences raise their arms between dark forms, as if the same collective tension were repeated on another scale. Scratches and imprints cross the fields and subtract compactness from the scene; the date 1974 places the work in a phase in which figuration and synthesis coexist without hierarchies. The city is not a backdrop but a common destiny: a place towards which bodies move carrying with them expectation, participation and restlessness. The figuration is built for masses and quintets.
ASO-0495, «Paesaggio in rosa», 1991 Pink, orange, blue and purple stretch out in large fields, separated by soft margins that make the space move forward and backward. In the center, a more collected form may recall a presence or a relief, but the 1991 landscape renounces any stable topography. It is color that establishes distance, climate and weight. Oppo brings the natural experience to a controlled emotional threshold: the image remains wide and breathable, yet an internal pressure seems to keep all parts together. Color moves the place away from naturalism.
