Artwork critiques

Critical readings of works by Augusto Salvatore Oppo, with images and links to archive records.

ASO-0619, Fish in enamelled and engraved copper, Augusto Salvatore Oppo

Critical reading

Copper fish: the profile and the engraved texture

The new sculpture ASO-0619 combines a compact animal silhouette with a texture of spirals and geometric motifs. The property documents the enamelled and engraved copper; the reproduction presents the fish on a neutral background.

ASO-0013, Archive catalogue designation: Campo di mais, Augusto Salvatore Oppo

Critical reading

Campo di mais: vegetation without a horizon

In this painting from 2000, vegetation fills the entire surface and makes landscape a close encounter. The dedication to Carlo adds a documented biographical trace, while comparison with other works clarifies its pictorial construction.

ASO-0024, Archive catalogue designation: Oro nel blu, Augusto Salvatore Oppo

Critical reading

Oro nel blu: metal as a field of light

An incised gold-colored rectangle stands against a broad blue field. The recorded mixed media on metal makes its relation between light, matter and space different from works that evoke metal only through color.

ASO-0284, Artist-authored title: Onda, 1986, Augusto Salvatore Oppo

Critical reading

Onda: a repeated word in blue

At left the word “onda” returns in irregular cursive writing; at right a blue rectangle crossed by diagonals alternates small pale green forms.

ASO-0453, Archive-assigned title: Ciò che vive sotto, 1987, Augusto Salvatore Oppo

Critical reading

Ciò che vive sotto: relief and colour

An almost black border contains a dense surface of curves, cuts and coloured planes. The reading follows visible matter and forms seeming to emerge without assigning an undocumented subject.

ASO-0454, Archive-assigned title: La luce interiore, undated, Augusto Salvatore Oppo

Critical reading

La luce interiore: a figure in red space

A tiny figure measures the breadth of a room built from red, green and brown planes. A glow beside the head and shadow on the floor give the scene tension that remains open to interpretation.

ASO-0470, Archive-assigned title: Affioramento, undated, Augusto Salvatore Oppo

Critical reading

Affioramento: colour beneath a pale web

An almost monochrome surface of pale pink and ivory comes alive with small grooves and raised-looking marks. Yellow, green and red emerge only after slow looking, changing the pale field.

ASO-0537, Archive catalogue designation: Stampi di lettere, 1960, mixed media on canvas by Augusto Salvatore Oppo

Critical reading

Stampi di lettere: grey as a surface of marks

An almost monochrome pattern crosses the canvas with segments, rectangles and dense oblique lines. The Archive title suggests letters, while the image keeps its marks on the threshold between writing and matter.

ASO-0586, Le vele, Augusto Salvatore Oppo: two ochre sail-like triangles rising from a dark green-black field

Critical reading

Le vele: two forms of light in darkness

Two ochre forms rise against a green-black field, separated by red bands and resting on short luminous lines. The family designation “Le vele” guides a reading in which marine landscape becomes a structure of colour.

ASO-0587, Il colorato, Augusto Salvatore Oppo: small abstract work with blue, ochre, red, grey and green fields

Critical reading

Il colorato: a small field of contrasts

In only 23 × 18 cm, blue, grey, ochre, red and pale-green fields interlock around a dark band. A family designation captures the chromatic impact, but balance also depends on pauses and irregular edges.

ASO-0588, A Italo con affetto, Augusto Salvatore Oppo: two dark clusters on a pale field with a handwritten dedication

Critical reading

A Italo con affetto: dark gesture and pale space

The autograph dedication “A Italo con affetto Augusto Oppo 68” records a recipient and year. Two dark clusters joined by lines and washes occupy only part of a pale field: the composition lives through gesture and surrounding emptiness.
